1 Corinthians 5:7 – You are unleavened

16-02-2019 - Posted by Andre Piet

Clean out, then, the old leaven, that you may be a fresh kneading, according as you are unleavened. For our Passover also, Christ, was sacrificed for our sakes…

Paul here refers to the well-known feast of unleavened bread. Since the exodus from Egypt, which was celebrated annually by Israel. On the fourteenth of the month of Nisan the Passover was sacrificed, after which the feast of unleavened bread began. That is prophetic, because the Passover lamb, unmistakably speaks of Christ. He was crucified on the date of Passover. This is how God fulfilled the Scriptures.

With the slaughter of the Passover, the foundation was laid for Israel’s salvation. Egypt and slavery have since belonged to the past and a new future laid before them. Depicted in the unleavened. Likewise it is today, because our Passover was also sacrificed: Christ. And then he rose from the dead. Once for all! And our identity is rooted in him: “you are unleavened” Paul writes. A new creation in Christ (2Cor.5:17)! That is not an ideal or a goal we should try to achieve. Then it would be leaven again. No, it is a given and joyful fact!
