Ephesians 2:8 – In grace, through faith

For in grace, through faith, are you saved and this is not out of you; it is God’s approach present…

In this verse, Paul describes the positions of those who are saved. It is through faith. The preposition ‘through’ indicates that faith is the means, or the channel through which we are saved. Where faith is trusting in God and confirming what He says. That causes us to be saved. Working or performing do not count for God, but trust in Him. He counts that for righteousness.

So faith is the means by which a person is saved. But also pay attention to how the sentence above begins with “in grace are you saved”. In Greek, the preposition is lacking, but because is in the so-called ‘third case’, it answers the question: where the salvation takes place. The answer is: in grace. Or possibly: by grace. Grace is the domain where salvation takes place.

Faith is not the ground on which we are saved. The ground on which we are saved is grace. Grace is also the ambiance in which this happens. Unconditional. And God does that through faith. And He gives that “…not out of you…not of works, lest anyone should be boasting”.
