in life and death…
04-10-2011 - Posted by Andre PietThat we are mortal people, we all know. Passers by. Earlier or later, the reality of our mortality will be driven home. Last Tuesday morning, I received a phone call from an associate, who told me that his wife, a few hours ago, had died. According to our human yardstick, she died much too young. In only a couple of years, the well-known, feared illness had gradually wasted away her body. The last few days before her death, her physical condition suddenly took a turn for the worst. And now, early in the morning, in restful resignation had she exhaled her last breath, right after her husband had read to her, from Philippians 4, about the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding. The struggle and the pain, especially the saying Good-bye, may certainly not be minimized. Her husband, her children and the many people dear to her can testify to all of this. And yet, her life was lived on an untouchable foundation: the faithfulness and love of God. In the knowledge of that truth she had lived, and also in that awareness she had fallen asleep.
