Newsflash: Cyrus the Great is alive!

In Israel, posters have been appearing everywhere in recent days with the striking text: “Cyrus the Great is alive!” The image shows Donald Trump in front of a background of the Israeli and American flags. According to The Jerusalem Post, this is part of a national billboard campaign honoring Trump as “the Cyrus of our time.”

In the Bible, Cyrus is the king of Persia who, after the Babylonian captivity, granted the people of Israel freedom to return and rebuild the temple. That specifically this name is now being associated with Trump in Israel says much about how extraordinary the current developments are being experienced there.

After the recent release of hostages, there is a widespread sense of relief and gratitude in Israel – and some even see in this a prophetic fulfillment. Just as Cyrus did in his time, so too now, a world leader, outside of Israel itself, would be used by God to bring liberation and restoration.

Remarkably, Cyrus not only enabled the return, but also commanded the rebuilding of the temple (Isaiah 44:28). In that light, the current imagery takes on a prophetic undertone – for it is precisely that rebuilding which, according to Scripture, will pave the way for what is yet to come.
