Working Group: 2008 Year of Luke 15

TERSCHUUR – The Evangelical Working Group within the Protestant Church has declared 2008 the ‘Luke 15-Year’. “In 2008 we want to remind the church of its core task: to seek out and bring home precious people who are at risk of being lost, to a loving Father God.”

A beautiful initiative to declare Luke 15 as the theme of the year. Luke 15 is the famous chapter with the three parables about what was lost, sought, and found. But this seeking and finding is not “the core task of the church,” as the Evangelical Working Group believes. Thankfully not! It is the Good Shepherd who searches for the lost sheep until He finds it.

It is not about the church seeking out its lost sheep… with minimal success.
No, it is about GOD seeking out His estranged, precious possessions.
He is the one who has lost something.
He seeks.
And He finds!
Success guaranteed! That is the Evangel (= good news)!
It would be “the core task of the church” to proclaim exactly that.
