Titus 2:5 Young wives (2)

02-06-2023 - Posted by Hans

… that they (= the aged women) may bring the young wives to a sense of their duty to be fond of their husbands, fond of their children, sane, chaste, domestic good, subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.

In addition to the young women being said to be “man-loving” and “child loving,” they are also instructed to be “sane.” It is already the third time (1:8; 2:2) in this letter that Paul gives such a high priority to this attitude. Because the ‘hormones’ often play a strong role in women, they must learn not to be guided by them, but by common sense.

The quality “pure” is also translated “chaste” (cf. 2 Cor. 11:2) and indicates that she does not flirt with other men but keeps her relationship pure with her own husband.

The young women are also said to be “domestic” and this underscores what we noted earlier: the job of married women and mothers is primarily in the home and not in an outside career. No matter how “politically incorrect” this may sound these days. Incidentally, when we say ‘house’ we should not only think of the house, but especially the family. It is up to the woman to make the house a home. In combination with a cheerful and joyful mood, she ensures that it is “good” (Gr. agathos) in the house!
