Titus 2:14 Christ giving Himself

13-07-2023 - Posted by Hans

…our Saviour Jesus Christ, Who gives Himself for us, that He should be redeeming us from all lawlessness and be cleansing for Himself a people to be about Him…

We look forward to the advent of our Savior Jesus Christ. This appearance is future, but the truth that He is our Savior goes back to the time when He gave Himself on our behalf. It began when He gave Himself up to die (John 10:17; Rom. 5:8; 2 Cor. 5:14). He gave Himself as a ransom (1Tim.2:6) and this idea of “redemption” also forces itself upon us in the above verse. Christ’s death was the price He paid to redeem us “from all lawlessness.” In His death and resurrection we have the guarantee of this. In the most basic sense of the word, “lawlessness” (Gr. anomia; without norm) is synonymous with sin (1John 3:4; Rom.6:19).

Christ’s surrender on our behalf began in his death, but it certainly does not end there. For now that He has risen and ascended, He still actively gives Himself on our behalf. He does not now devote his attention to the world, but to a people who are today being called out for Himself and around Him. Them He sanctifies and cleanses!
