Titus 2:10 Adorning the teaching of God our Saviour

Slaves are to be subject to their own owners, to be well-pleasing in all things, not contradicting; not embezzling, but displaying all good faithfulness, that they may be adorning the teaching that is of God our Saviour, in all things.

The instructions Paul gives for the slaves are of a special nature. Slaves are deprived of their freedom and, as serfs of their masters, often have no rights in practice. But precisely because of that position they are able to show the great glory of “the teaching of God” like no other. Not by rebelling against their masters or by speaking loudly on their rights. Not even by vengefully taking back (from) their masters, but on the contrary “displaying all good faithfullness”.

The attitude that Paul describes is clearly not “according to man” but that is precisely why it is such a special display! A slave who shows such unquestioning loyalty to his master in everything (!) says without words: God’s saving grace embraces all mankind, free of charge (2:11)! And even though your attitude as a master does not earn you my respect, I get to show you that God is also your Savior.Wouldn’t such an attitude be a beautiful adornment of “the teaching of God our Savior”?!
