Titus 1:9 to entreat with sound teaching

It is the function of the supervisor to uphold the faithful word (according to the teaching). When he does, it enables him to do two things. First of all, to entreat with sound teaching. The word for ‘entreat’ means from the word structure ‘beside-call’ and that can be both comforting and admonishing in terms of content. The verb evokes the association of supporters shouting at athletes in the racecourse.
Besides here and in 2:1 we also encounter the expression “the sound teaching” in both Timothy letters. In 1 Timothy 1:10 and 11, Paul says that sound doctrine teaches “the gospel of the glory of the happy God.” God is GOD for He is the One who gives every creature a place and it is His glory that He succeeds in every goal He sets. That’s the sound teaching that would sound. And if Paul himself could no longer be present (as here in Crete), the supervisor would see to it that this teaching was given and maintained in the various places.
