Titus 1:4 Grace and peace

28-04-2023 - Posted by Hans

To Titus, a genuine child according to the common faith: grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus, our Saviour.

As in every letter in the NT, both the writer and the addressees are named in the opening lines. A logical sequence, because that is what you primarily want to know about a letter: who wrote to whom? Then follows the customary greeting of grace and peace. A greeting that, strictly speaking, is not a request or a wish, but a statement. Both grace and peace (in that order!) actually come from God the Father. He alone is the Source of grace (Gr. charis), i.e., of what makes truly glad for free. It is that favor that brings about peace because it gives peace and harmony. What more does a person need?!

In 1 Corinthians 8:6, Paul writes, “… one God the Father, out of whom are all things (…) and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all is…”. These are the proportions in the Bible. God as Father is the Source from Whom all things proceed, while the Lord Jesus Christ is the channel through which all things come. The same is true of the grace and peace spoken of in Titus 1:4. God the Father is the Origin of it and through “Christ Jesus our Savior” it comes to us.
