Newsflash: Harari: we will turn into gods

In a recent fragment, Yuval Noah Harari said the following about the future of humanity and technology:

And with biometric sensors and the like it is very likely that in some 50 years people will literally be part of a network. All bodies, all brains would be connected with one another (…). These powers will truly turn us into gods, and I do not mean this as a literary metaphor, but literally: humans acquire divine abilities, especially the ability to create and design life.

“We will turn into gods.” Harari’s words sound like an echo of the lie the serpent held before the woman in the garden of Eden. “You will be as God…”. Thousands of years later, this promise seems to have come within humanity’s reach.

Is this not also the fulfillment of humanity’s striving in the days of the building of the tower of Babel? Nothing seems impossible for humanity when hands are joined worldwide. The Bible itself also recognizes this. “… now nothing of what they plan to do will be impossible for them” (Gen. 11:6). It is human technology in its ultimate consequence. But just as the Babel-like striving was then broken from above, so it will also be at the end of this aeon.
