Recently, someone on the forum raised the question of what the Goedbericht site has to do with the Dutch “League Against Profanity.” The answer is simple: not much. I see it as our biblical calling to shine as lights in the night (Phil. 2:15). But it is not our task (nor is it within our competence) to drive out the darkness. That will only happen when the Sun of righteousness rises over this world in due time. Until then, we live in a world that is dark. So be it. This is quite apart from the fact that actions against profanity are, by definition, counterproductive. Launching legal procedures against, for instance, a comedian who drags God’s Name through the mud is not only pointless – it will only cause him to blaspheme more.

Incidentally, the League Against Profanity would do better to look a bit closer to home: at the profanity in the church. All too often, a cursed gospel is preached from the pulpit (see Paul in Galatians 1). A so-called “gospel” in which God damns*. In the world, people shout thoughtlessly, “G.d d*mn…!” But from orthodox pulpits, it is preached and taught! Who actually taught the world to curse?

* Dutch Koenen Dictionary:
to damn: to condemn eternally, to consign to hell
