If, then, you were roused together with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Paul does not begin here with a command, but with a statement. The word “if” may sound uncertain, but here it has the meaning: since this is so. The starting point stands firm. Believers have been roused together with Christ. This connects with what precedes: first dying together with Christ, now being roused together with Him. Whoever is united with Him shares in His position.

In position we are identified with Christ above at God’s right hand, but “according to the flesh” we are still here below. That is a tension, and therefore the call to seek the things that are above. When our body will once be glorified, that call will no longer apply. Then we will no longer need to seek, for what is now still hidden will then be manifested in glory (3:4).

Seeking the things that are above points to a continual orientation toward Him who has now received the highest place: at God’s right hand. As believers we also share that position with Him (Eph.2:6). Do you want to know who you are and what you are destined for? Then you should not look at yourself or at the people around you. Look upward—there is our life!
