Romans 8:26 – Our inarticulate groanings & the pleading spirit!

Now, similarly, the spirit also is aiding our infirmity, for what we should be praying for, to accord with what must be, we are not aware, but the spirit itself is pleading for us with inarticulate groanings.

In verse 22 Paul wrote that all creation is groaning together as if  in labor pains. In verse 23 he also includes the believers. As long as we wait for the deliverance of the body, we also groan. We also don’t know what to pray because we don’t know what “must be.” We sigh, without words. Inarticulate.

The words “inarticulate groaning” are usually associated with the spirit of God pleading. That spirit would plead “with inarticulate groaning.” But that doesn’t make any logical sense. For we are groaning in our weakness. We do not know what to pray and so we are without words.

God’s spirit, on the other hand, is strong and comes to the rescue of our weakness. That spirit is not without words, on the contrary! She pleads and speaks on our behalf. Precisely because we have no words, it is the spirit that, with God’s word, gives us strength and is our help in it. Nothing pleads for us so much as the word that GOD makes all things work together for good (:28)!
