religious emo-TV

This past Tuesday I watched ‘Het Elfde Uur’ (the eleventh hour) on TV. It featured a few guests who will present a broadcast for the EO (Dutch evangelical broadcasting company) in the last week of this year (Lucille Werner and Wilma Nanninga). Henny Huisman was also present. The theme was: the search for God. When you listen to the stories, ‘God’ seems to be more or less synonymous with a special, heavenly feeling. Wilma Nanninga compared it to an orgasm… Well then. On the EO website, director Henk Hagoort glorified such God-experiences and called the broadcast as a whole “impressive.” Of the guests, Lucille Werner was the only one to push back, as she refused to abandon her critical attitude. Bravo! Honest questions deserve an honest answer.

The EO seems, with this religious variant, to be fully on the track of emo-TV. Ecstasy and tears are the celebrated ingredients that apparently matter in the search for God. But what do such God-experiences have to do with the Gospel? The Gospel is a message. The announcement of rock-solid facts concerning the Saviour of the world.
And faith? Faith is nothing other than wholeheartedly affirming that good message.
With or without tears.
