Psalm 19:14 – heart & mouth

23-07-2020 - Posted by Andre Piet

May the saying of my mouth be acceptable And the soliloquy of my heart be pleasing before You, O Yahweh, my Rock and my Redeemer.

A person makes himself known in what the mouth says and in what the heart considers. What hands and feet do (act and walk) only follows from that. But who you are, your identity is determined by what you think and by the words you pronounce. Heart and mouth.

David’s prayer is that the words of his mouth and the consideration of his heart would please GOD. How else than when the heart and mouth are filled with the words of GOD himself. That is what Psalm 19 is about. The words GOD which are trustworthy, give wisdom, rejoice the heart, lighten the eyes, are more precious than gold, and sweeter than honey. Pleasant is the heart that is full of that so that the mouth overflows with it! It is the Word that does this!

All that speaks of “my rock and my redeemer”. As a rock, He is the one I can rely on. As a redeemer (go’el) He is the closest, wealthy blood relative who stands up for my interests. He literally became that for us, in Jesus Christ… the son of David!
