Philippians 4:18 A well pleasing sacrifice to God

26-04-2023 - Posted by Hans

Now I am collecting all, and am superabounding. I have been filled full, receiving from Epaphroditus the things from you, an odor fragrant, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God.

Hear Paul say: I have everything and I am superbounding. A man in captivity. Not begging for more, but gratefully recognizing that he has everything…that God deems necessary. Abundant and fully equipped.

This is the second and last occurrence of Epaphroditus’ name. We already knew (2:25-29) that Paul valued him as his co-worker and fellow soldier. He was a representative of the Philippians to provide Paul with everything he needed. Once he arrived at Paul after a long and arduous journey, he became very ill. Now that he has recovered, Paul sends him back to the home front in Philippi with this letter.

The gift sent by the Philippians was so much more than just a lavish gift. It was a sacrifice. Not an offering to Paul, but an offering to God. For the story of the gift demonstrated God’s glory. It showcased the glory of the Good Tidings that Paul proclaimed and which made the Philippians so happy. Therefore, the gift they had sent Paul was an offering to God. An odor fragrant, well pleasing!
