… to [the] only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory unto the eons. Amen!
Paul closes his letter to the Romans with a doxology that sums everything up: God is the only wise. Not the most wise, not the highest among others, but the only One who can rightly be called so. All true wisdom is derived from Him.
The Greek word for wisdom (sophia) is possibly derived from the Hebrew tsapha, which means lookout post or watchtower. That meaning is telling. Whoever is positioned at a height has overview. Wisdom has to do with perspective, with outlook, with the ability to survey the whole.
This immediately makes clear why Paul speaks of “the only wise God.” There is only One who truly has the overview. He alone surveys heaven and earth, past, present, and future. What is fragmentary to us is for Him one coherent whole. Nothing escapes His eye, nothing surprises Him, nothing gets out of hand. God is wise because He has perspective like no other. He knows where the world ages – the eons – are heading. He knows the end from the beginning. While we often grope in the dark and ask why things happen, He knows exactly what they serve. What seems senseless or incomprehensible to us has a place and a purpose in His plan. His wisdom guarantees that everything will work out according to what He has purposed.
