This Jesus God raises, of which we all are witnesses.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not presented in the New Testament as a mystical experience, but as a fact that occurred in history. Peter declares on the day of Pentecost that God raised Jesus, “of which we all are witnesses.” That one word all expresses the immense power of this testimony. It means not only that there were many witnesses (more than five hundred!; 1 Cor. 15:6), but that everyone within the apostolic circle confirmed the same thing. There was not a single dissenting voice, no exception. The testimony was completely unanimous. The apostles had nothing to gain — but everything to lose — and yet they spoke as one man.
And then this: their proclamation began in Jerusalem — precisely in the place where Jesus had shortly before been crucified and where the empty tomb was located. If their message had not been based on unanimity, it would have been refuted on the spot. But the movement could not be stopped there of all places. The fact itself stood — and their united testimony affirmed it.
That is why the resurrection is not a shaky tale, but a rock-solid good message. God has fulfilled what was foretold in the Scriptures by making Christ alive as the Firstfruit. It is the guarantee that all humanity will be made alive… each in his own order!
