ignorant professor…

This evening in Delft one of the meetings in the series ‘hot issues’ will take place. This time with the theme ‘what to think about hell?’. The main speaker is Prof. Bram van der Beek, who already published his contribution today in the Nederlands Dagblad.
Van der Beek defends the doctrine of endless hell with the proposition that justice simply must be done to all injustice in the world. The proposition in itself is as true as can be, but it says absolutely nothing with regard to this subject. God will certainly do justice and “affliction and distress shall be on every soul of man who is effecting evil” (Rom.2:9). No doubt about that. But what does that say about an endless hell? Van der Beek writes: “hell is the great rectification…”. I ask: what is being rectified in endless torment? Temporary injustice is ‘settled’ by endless vengeance…? What is being set right when those concerned will never, never, never come to justice again?
Prof. van der Beek’s lines of reasoning completely bypass what Scripture teaches about God’s plan of destiny for all His creation. That is, to become “all in all.” No sin or injustice will be able to prevent Him from that. To understand this, however, insight into God’s “purpose of the eons” is indispensable (Eph.3:11). Van der Beek lavishly scatters terms such as ‘hell’ and ‘eternal’ without the slightest understanding of the underlying meaning of words such as ‘gehenna’ and ‘aion’.
To van der Beek’s opponent (author of this book) falls the task of setting right so much ignorance…

P.S. In the Nederlands Dagblad, be sure to read the commentary by Bertus Buijs. Student at the same university where Bram van der Beek is professor… > Ps.119:99
