Evangelical Broadcasting pursues sneaky policy

The Dutch Evangelical Broadcasting Compagny (EO) director Ad de Boer regularly expresses, in his weblogs, his sympathy toward homosexuals. No problem. What I do object to, however, is the suggestive vagueness with which he continually wraps this. The EO has always held the position that homosexual behavior is sinful. That position has not been officially abandoned by the EO, but they no longer say it out loud. Very brave, indeed.
This week, as a “regular weblog reader,” I put De Boer under considerable pressure (he himself wrote: “with a gun to my chest”) to simply take a stand and speak plainly. He then said that he considered the question of whether homosexuals are allowed to ‘do it’ a shibboleth question, and therefore he did not want to answer it. Very clever. By not saying YES, he keeps the opponents of homosexuality on his side, and by not saying NO, homosexuals within the EO are (carefully) given room. I call that sneaky, because this is a fundamental policy shift being enacted through strategic silence.
