Ephesians 1:23 – The ecclesia which complements Christ

30-04-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet

…and gives Him, as Head over all, to the ecclesia which is His body, the complement of the One completing the all in all…

The ecclesia is the body of Christ. This truth, which is only presented in Paul’s letters, expresses how much Christ and the ecclesia are connected. There is no closer unity than between head and body. It is an unbreakable unity. The relationship is much closer than that between a bridegroom and a bride, which is often compared to the relationship between the Lord and Israel. But the unity of Head and Body is not a covenant relationship, it as an organic relationship.

Paul calls the ecclesia, as being the body of Christ, His complement. The commonly used translations usually speak of “fullness”. The idea is that the ecclesia complements Christ and completes Him. A head without a body is not complete of course . That is why the body complements the head. The head is nothing without the body. So Christ Jesus is incomplete without the ecclesia.

The truth of the body of Christ, as a complement and completion of Christ Jesus, determines us at the unimaginably high position that God has reserved for the ecclesia. His position is our position!
