Colossians 2: 6 – Walking in Hem

Paul reminds the Colossians of the day they heard the Gospel of Epaphras (1:5) and “realized the grace of God in truth” (1:6). Until then they had been estranged and hostile (1:21), but the Good News changed them from within. What Paul is putting forward is that as they once received Christ Jesus the Lord by grace, so they would also walk in Him. Since the Colossians had become believers freely, without conditions or merit, they would also walk in Him freely, without conditions or merit.
Paul’s exhortation is understood against the background of the teachings that threatened the Colossians. Preachers wanted to convince them that now that the Colossians had become believers, they would not stop there but would develop further with additional philosophies and traditions (2:8). That whole idea, however, is at odds with the message they had received! After all, they had heard and agreed that “Christ Jesus, the Lord” is enough and that they are also complete in Him. “Christ Jesus the Lord” was raised from the dead and exalted above all principality and authority (2:10). In Him everything abounds from the beginning. Hence: walk in Him!
