Colossians 1: 21 – On earth but also in the heavens

24-10-2024 - Posted by Hans

And you, being once estranged and enemies in comprehension, by wicked acts, yet now He reconciles…

As in the previous verse, the unique Pauline word is used here: to fully reconcile (Gr. apo-katallasso). Here it also becomes clear to whom this reconciliation applies. It concerns creatures who are alienated and hostile in thought. The effect of that disposition appears both towards God and among ourselves “by wicked acts”.

Remember that being alienated and hostile is not an obstacle, but rather a prerequisite for reconciliation! It is GOD who guarantees reconciliation and man is completely passive in this. GOD turns enemies into enthusiasts!

In verse 20, Paul argued that God will fully reconcile to Himself ‘all’, both on earth and in heaven. As long as there is even one creation that is still alienated from God, this comprehensive and total reconciliation is not completed. For not one creature must be left wanting before this Divine purpose is fulfilled. Universal reconciliation will not be realized until every tongue will confess Jesus Christ to the glory of God the Father. These are NOW only a relatively few. They are the privileged firstfruits who are already experiencing what every creature will one day experience!
