Colossians 1: 20 – That in all He may be becoming first

This verse is the absolute climax in Paul’s description of the glory of the Son. A description that began with the statement that He is the image of God, the invisible. Firstborn of every creature, for in Him, but also through Him (who is the personification of the Word!) all things were created. But everything was also created for Him and He is before all things.
The emphasis in this description is unmistakably on the universal meaning of the Son. The words sound again and again: the all, every creature, everything, heaven and earth. The glory of the Son is all-encompassing. That tone started from verse 15 and reaches its climax here in verse 20. This universal aspect of the glory of God’s Son is crowned in the reconciliation that God brings about through Him. Later we will go into more detail about the fact that ‘reconciliation’ is always related to changing enmity (and alienation) into peace. But now realize what the colossal scope of this is: God reconciles all to Himself. No one excepted!
