Colossians 1: 20 – On earth but also in the heavens

The apostle Paul here paints us a creation in which perfect peace reigns. The Creator himself brings about this peace, since the creatures themselves have only shown alienation and enmity. Both towards God and towards each other. But God guarantees that He will fully reconcile ‘all’ to Himself. He does this through His Son, “making peace through the blood of His cross.” God wins the hearts of all His creatures by allowing His Son to die – for a world that murdered Him.
The scope of “making peace through the blood of his cross” is all-encompassing. Of course, it is not about stones, mountains, oceans or animals, because all these creations were or are never alienated from God, let alone hostile to Him. No, it is humanity on earth of whom that can be said. But not only that, all creatures estranged and hostile to God will also be reconciled in heaven! For example, think of all those powers of darkness in the heavenly places (Eph.6:12) – they too will all be reconciled to God!
