Colossians 1: 18 – That in all He may be becoming first

24-10-2024 - Posted by Hans

…And He is the Head of the body, the ecclesia, Who is Sovereign, Firstborn from among the dead, that in all He may be becoming first…

This passage from verse 15 is one great hymn to the Son and his prominent place in both this creation and in the world of the resurrection. With the Divine motive: “that in all he may be becoming first.” God is not satisfied with the first place for his Son alone in this creation. No, He would also take first place in establishing the new creation.

That the Son is “the first” has several dimensions. First, it says that the Son is given the highest rank. Our Dutch word ‘vorst’ is directly related to the English ‘first’. The Son is superior to every creature.

Secondly, ‘being first’ also means that the Son precedes all creation. God created everything through Him (as the personified word) but also for Him.

And thirdly, the Son is also “the first” because He is the prototype of every human being. After all, Adam was created in God’s image, that is, in the Christ who would come, “the last Adam”!
