Colossians 1: 18 – He is the Head of the body
24-10-2024 - Posted by Hans…And He is the Head of the body, the ecclesia, Who is Sovereign, Firstborn from among the dead, that in all He may be becoming first…
The previous verses were about “every creature” and “all” that was created in, through and for the Son. In verse 18 the perspective shifts to the priority that Christ also has in the new creation. A creation that begins with Christ as the firstborn from the dead. As such, He is also “the head of the body, the ecclesia.” The word ‘head’ by definition contains the idea of ’first’. In Hebrew, both words (rosh – rishon) are also directly related. The head comes first – that starts with childbirth.
“The ecclesia” is the company that God has called and gathered through the Gospel since Christ’s resurrection. In the beginning only from the Jews and later also from the nations. The wall (“the law of precepts in decrees”, Eph.2:15) that initially stood between the two groups has been demolished. “The two are made one.” That this ecclesia is the body of Christ has been revealed through Paul (and through him alone!). Just as head and body form an inseparable and organic unity, so too do Christ and the ecclesia. His position is our position!
