Colossians 1: 16 – All is created through Him

… firstborn of every creature, for in Him is all created, (…), all is created through Him and for Him…

To explain that the Son is “the firstborn of every creature,” Paul points out the prominent place that the Son occupies in relation to “all” (Gr. ta panta) that has been created. Paul outlines this position using three prepositions. “IN Him the all was created”, “the all was created THROUGH Him” and “the all” is “created INTO Him”. We already thought about the first preposition (“in Him”). It means: all creation is in the domain of the firstborn.

However, ’the all’ was also created through the Son. That does not mean that the Son is also the Creator, but that the Creator created everything through Him. The Son was the instrument through which God brought about creation. How God did this through Him is not mentioned here, but elsewhere it is. In John 1:3 we read that all things were made through the word. God spoke and it was done (Ps.33:6,9). That word is not a co-creator (see Job 9:8; Isa.44:24) but the means used by the Creator. It is this Divine Word that became flesh (John 1:14) in the Son of God’s love!
