Paul’s prayer is that his readers will be filled with the realization of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. This realization and the process of being fulfilled by it is essential and indispensable. A dignified walk is not about the outside, but about the inside. Not for the form, but for the content.
The meaning of the word for “worthy” (Gr. axios) is the key to understanding the phrase “to walk worthily of the Lord.” “Worthy” is derived from “value,” which refers to the price at which something is valued. “To walk worthily of the Lord” therefore stands for a walk in which the Lord is valued. By definition, that starts with awareness and with wisdom and spiritual insight. You cannot possibly walk worthily of the Lord without first knowing Him and therefore learning to appreciate Him.
Walking worthy of the Lord is not a set of good manners or a code of conduct. Only when one has convincingly demonstrated how valuable it is to know the Lord does it become completely logical to walk worthily of Him.
