… they will turn their ear away from the truth and turn to the myths.
In his second letter to Timothy, Paul sketches an extremely somber picture of the future of Christendom. He characterizes its final phase as outright “perilous times” (3:1). People will no longer endure the truth and will turn to myths. The truth of the inspired Scriptures is relinquished (3:16).
The Greek word myths refers to fabricated stories without historical foundation. Peter emphasizes that the proclamation of the apostles stands in sharp contrast to “artfully contrived myths” (2 Peter 1:16). Myths may carry meaning, but they did not actually happen. We see Paul’s prediction taking place today. The Bible is not rejected (with theologians leading the way), but reduced to story. Precisely this makes the deviation so insidious. The historicity of what is written is not necessarily denied, but declared irrelevant. The Bible is then read as a reflection of human beings rather than as revelation from God.
But Scripture does not allow that space. The Evangel presents itself as a report, not as an interpretation. The truth stands firm, because what it conveys has actually taken place. Where history is reduced to story, the truth is relinquished. The evangel derives its authority not from experience, but from the fact that God has actually acted.
