VATICAN CITY – Archaeologists may have discovered a sarcophagus containing the remains of the apostle Paul in the Basilica of Saint Paul in Vatican City.

This was reported by the news site Alpha-Online. The Vatican archaeologists state that the sarcophagus dates back to the year 390. It is known that Paul was buried in Rome after his execution, and that his remains were later, around the year 390, placed in a stone coffin.

The archaeologists have been excavating beneath the Basilica of Saint Paul since 2002. The digs were completed last month. Only now have the first announcements about the discovery been made public.

“Our goal was to expose the remains of the tomb beneath the basilica,” says Giorgio Filippi, leader of the team of archaeologists. According to him, it was assumed from the start that Paul was buried at this site. Now that a stone sarcophagus has been found in that location, Filippi has no doubt:
“This is the sarcophagus containing the bones of Paul.”
