1Corinthians 2:3-5 – In the power of God!

And I came to be with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling, and my word and my heralding were not with the persuasive words of human wisdom, but with demonstration of spirit and of power, that your faith may not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

When Paul came to Athens and later to Corinth, he did not try to rival the philosophers. He did not come with important names from the religious or philosophical world to support his message. No, he came to proclaim someone who was nailed to a pole like a criminal and died. Indeed, that is not something to impress with. That doesn’t sound ‘slick’ or attractive.

Paul did not enter as philosopher or theologian. In 1 Corinthians 15:3-5 we read what the ABC of Paul’s evangel is. First, that Christ died. Second, that he was buried. And finally that he “has been roused the third day according to the Scriptures”. Behold the “demonstration of Spirit and power”! Paul proved it and showed the ‘receipts’ He did not reason, he proved! And he indeed testified of Christ who died in weakness, but also that he was roused from the grave on the third day “by the power of GOD” (2 Cor. 13:4)!
