1 Timothy 4:2 – Hypocrisy

08-02-2024 - Posted by Hans

Now the spirit is saying explicitly, that in subsequent eras some will be withdrawing from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and the teachings of demons, in the hypocrisy of false expressions, their own conscience having been cauterized.

The teachings that some would introduce into Christendom in later times are called by Paul “teachings of demons.” Originating from religions that have no knowledge of the one God and his Word. How is it possible to convince people who were taught by the “teacher of the nations” of “teachings of demons”? This requires “deceiving spirits” who disguise themselves “in hypocrisy of false expression.” The word “hypocrisy” originally meant in Greek: play. An actor pretends and plays to be someone he is not.

It is in “hypocrisy of false words” that “deceiving spirits and teachings of demons” can be recognized. People say this, but they mean that. Under the guise of Biblical-sounding language, matters are introduced that are at odds with Scripture. Shortly after the death of the apostles, more and more such teachings entered Christendom. Just think of the doctrine of the Trinity. Or the endless punishment of hell. Paganism with a Christian twist.
