1 Timothy 2:12– Hierarchy of man and woman

Now I am not permitting a woman to be teaching nor yet to be domineering over a man, but to be in quietness, for Adam was first molded, thereafter Eve.

Paul does not have a specific person in mind here because both ‘woman’ and ‘man’ are indefinite here. A general principle is laid down here: not a woman, but a man is given the task and position to provide leadership and education. Women would be left alone there.

The fact that Paul does not allow a woman to teach is not an isolated issue. And the instruction is not absolute either. For example, in Titus 2:3 he holds the older women to be “teachers of good.” But the context in the above verse makes it clear that Paul does not want a woman to act pedantic or independent towards a man. Her qualities are not at issue, but her position is naturally different. Paul’s appeal to the order of creation is therefore significant: “first Adam was formed, then Eve.” This order also determines the (hierachical) ranking. As we also read elsewhere: the man is the head (1Cor.11:3). That is not Paul’s personal opinion or a discussion piece. It makes sense and that is why he states it with authority.
