1 Corinthians 10:1 – be not ignorant

10-07-2019 - Posted by Andre Piet

For I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, that our fathers all were under the cloud, and all passed  through the sea,

Although a new theme begins in the letter, the word “for” shows that there’s an undeniable link to the preceding. Chapter 9: 27 ended with the possibility that Paul would be disqualified if he wouldn’t walk his talk. Then you’re “perishing”, as earlier indicated by the apostle (8: 11). It’s not the case that your ultimate salvation should be at stake, for that’s impossible. The Evangel is surely a message that “the living GOD is a Saviour of all mankind…” (1 Timothy 4: 10)!

But although this final salvation is a guaranteed fact, it’s not said that this life couldn’t perish. The  purport of chapter 9 was yet that such as an athlete or a boxer only can win with waiving and focussed on their purpose, a believer only gains the incorruptible wreath looking off to the Evangel (9: 23).

Once an entire people left Egypt. Nevertheless, most of them died in the desert. What matters is to remain on the track of the Word.
