“God does not play dice”

Einstein is known for the famous statement: “God does not play dice.” By this, he meant that everything in creation is subject to laws of cause and effect. The Creator, by definition, is never taken by surprise.

What strikes me is how few people can wholeheartedly affirm this with Einstein. Oh yes, people often claim to believe that God is all-knowing, but if one also seriously teaches that God took a risk when He created man, then it becomes clear that the first belief isn’t really held. Humans take risks because they don’t know what the future holds. If we knew the future, there would be no such thing as risk. If I knew which stocks would rise tomorrow afternoon on the market, then it’s no risk at all for me to buy them cheaply in the morning.

God, of course, took no risk when He created man and planted the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden. He knew full well what chain of sin and misery would be set in motion when He began the ‘human project’. HE KNEW THAT! And as a good planner, He also calculated the cost of it (Luke 14:28). When man ate from the forbidden fruit, no accident occurred for God. It was no setback, and He didn’t have to (so to speak) call 911. When Adam transgressed, he did exactly what God already knew he would do. Man is not, to God, a die that could just as well roll one way as another. Advocates of the idea of ‘free will’ would love to have us believe that.

They like to proclaim that people are not puppets –
but what they mean is: that God is not the one pulling the strings…
