1 Timothy 3:15– Pillar and base of the truth

… how one must behave in God’s house, which is the ecclesia of the living God, the pillar and base of the truth.

In verse 15, Paul makes it clear that God’s house today is “the ecclesia of the living God.” God does not live in a house of stones but in a spiritual house, characterized above all by truth. The concept of truth already played an important role in this letter. God wants all people to be saved and come to a realization of truth (2:4). Paul presents himself as herald and delegate and “teacher of the nations in faith and truth” (2:7). He underlines this by declaring: “I speak the truth, I don’t lie”.

When “the ecclesia of the living God” is called a “base of truth,” it means that the truth that Paul was able to make known to the world has an established base there. In other words, if that truth cannot be found there, then it is not “God’s house… the ecclesia of the living God.”

The fact that “the ecclesia of the living God” is also called a “pillar… of the truth” means that it also stands for the truth. It appears as a monument and a memorial column. Steadfast, unwavering, she repeats “the word of truth” entrusted to her.
