Ephesians 6:4 – Bringing up

25-09-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet

And fathers, do not be vexing your children, but be nurturing them in the discipline and admonition of the Lord.

In the previous verses, the children were addressed in their attitude towards their parents, now Paul specifically addresses the fathers. As ‘lord of the house’ they soon run the risk of being authoritarian and judgmental. Making the children to become embittered because they can never meet the requirements. That is the opposite of raising children “with a promise” (6:2). Where GOD’s promise is the guidance, trust prevails that GOD always provides what is needed. That awareness causes one to be relaxed and grateful and creates an atmosphere of joy in the house.

Fathers are ultimately responsible for the upbringing of the children, which literally means : to provide with nutrition. Not only physically but above all mentally. To ensure that the children become strong, develop resistance and have growth. In the first place, of course, by familiarizing them with the word of GOD. To show and engrave the scriptures. By showing them what a source of wisdom, expectation and joy is in them. What a blessing it is when children see that in the lives of their parents!
