Ephesians 5:23 – Head of the wife as…

29-08-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet

For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is Head of the ecclesia, and He is the Saviour of the body.

In this section Paul places the relationship between a man and his wife in heavenly light. The relationship between Christ and the ecclesia is set as an example to the man and his wife. Note: it is not the other way around. Marriage is not a model for the relationship between Christ and the ecclesia. Christ and the ecclesia are not represented as being married and certainly not as bridegroom and bride. Christ and the ecclesia are in proportion to each other as head and body. An unbreakable unity and community.

That Christ is the head of the ecclesia, his body, means that he is leading the way. As head he takes care of the ecclesia. Yes, he is her savior. Because where the body is in danger, the head provides protection. This is how Christ shields and protects the ecclesia. He completely surrenders to her and provides everything she needs. Now, what Christ is an means for the ecclesia, is presented to man as an example in relation to his wife. Like a heavenly model!
