Ephesians 3:17 – Rooted and grounded

15-06-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet

…Christ to dwell in your hearts through faith, that you, having been rooted and grounded in love…

Paul continues his prayer. He wants Christ to live in the hearts of his readers, through faith. He is not talking about “Jesus” but about “the Christ”. Jesus is the name that is linked to his earthly existence. Christ, on the other hand, is the title that belongs to him as the resurrected and glorified man (1:20). In this letter, “The Christ” is especially the title of him who is the Head of the body, the ecclesia (1:22). Physically, he now lives in heaven. Fore he has ascended there (4:8). But “through faith” he can live in our hearts. Every believer is “in Christ”. The question is: does He also live in the heart of every believer? This is only possible “through faith” – that is to say amen to his promises. Because he does it. He makes it – he alone!

When Christ lives in our hearts like that “through faith”, we have found solid ground. As a house that is founded. Or as a tree that is firmly rooted and finds food in … love. Agape – that is God’s love that is all-encompassing and unconditional.
